Devlog 2: Prototype

Hello everyone!

In our second week of research we build a playable prototype in unity with our core mechanics completed to test out how the game plays and to see how fun it is to play. Together with the prototype we also had to work a lot on the art bible and the game design document.

Our developer started working on the prototype with the help of our sound designer to try and implement all the core mechanics.  Our sound designer also started working on the sound bible. For the music of the game we will contact another class, who will be able to fully focus on this. The artist completed the full art bible and already explored some unity like importing textures and meshes, creating materials, particles, animation and so on as they didn't have any experience with in unity yet.

Art

The past week, we spend some time to check proportions and shapes of the character. These are the result we got:

Animations:

We had some trouble making the animations because for some reason they weren't being called correctly or didn't play when we wanted them to but we finally managed to get things working.  We also started testing out facial expressions with the help of different materials called in animations.  Here is an example of a simple test:

Level design:

We already made some basic blockouts and iterated on them a bit. We tried different height levels in our rooms and filling them with lots of props or the opposite with not much props in the middle.  In our prototype we currently have the left blockout to give the player a feeling of how the room will look like and what perspective we are working with.

Programming

These week we spend some time to make another prototype, this time in Unity. We tried to make the same amount of features in this prototype as the last week in Unreal. This time we needs to develop it with actually code and not with blueprints. This takes a bit more time to make it. This is a short summary of the implemented features:

  • Player
    • Movement
      • Controller input to move
      • Animations added depended on the speed
    • Attack
      • Slapping with animation
      • Throwing with a fixed force
      • Stagger for now .7 seconds
    • UI
      • Adding multiple UI for every player when joined and amount of sleepiness

Planning

Next week we hope we will be able to tell you that we have gone in production! So we can begin working on al aspects of the game like mechanics, assets, sound, particle effects, characters...

See you next week!
