Devlog 3: Production 1 Sprint 1

Hi everyone!

Unfortunately our project was not yet given the green light to start production, but no worries cause next week we will have a better working and more fun to play prototype.

Prototype:

The main reason our prototype wasn't given a go is because the brawling aspect of our game wasn't yet fun enough. There is no real indication when someone is about to hit you and the animations didn't quite feel right for a pillow fight yet.  Our developer is working hard on making the prototype better now, while our artists  focused on doing more research and learning more about unity. We tried making some particle effects and animations more specific for a pillow fight.

Particles:

We tested the unity particle system more in depth this week and made some cool particles. The particles are just tests and don't fit in our game yet but it is a cool example of what kind of effects we want in the game. Here is an example of an effect, we could use this effect when someone is hit with a pillow.

Animations:

We looked into making custom animations for the game to give the game a better playing feeling and to make it more fitting for a pillow fight. As none of us are animators we had to learn this ourselves. We experimented with the unity animation rigging system to create some animations but we can't seem to get this working with our other animations. So we looked into animating in maya as an alternative. There is still a lot to learn about animating and especially to make the animations less static.

Gameplay:

We updated all the attacking animations so you can charge to do more damage. This gives the other player a good indication when you are about to hit so he has a chance to block you or run away. The throwing mechanic is also better now, this also works with a charge now and a bar to indicate how hard you're going to throw.

Movement is now also disabled when blocking and throwing, but rotation is still active so you can aim your shots and blocks. The jump animation consists of 3 separate parts now: the start, falling and the landing.

Sound:

We already contacted someone who wants to do the music for the game. We made some sound effects for the UI and have some placeholders for the hit sounds.

Planning:

Next week our prototype will hopefully be approved so we can finally start the production process for our game.

See you all next week!
